The benefits of retinol cannot be disputed, nor can the potential irritation, especially for sensitive skin, which has given rise to natural alternatives. TikTok has given this age-old ingredient new life with hacks like Retinol Sandwiching flooding the platform.

Siliphos is the latest edition of Givaudan Active Beauty's well-aging portfolio, positioned as the best natural alternative to retinoids. The ingredient is extracted by green fractionation from milk thistle fruits and powered by phytosome technology. Givaudan claims the new active ingredient outperforms the buzzy plant-based retinol alternative bakuchiol while offering benefits that challenge retinoid efficacy by reducing wrinkles without side effects.

Bakuchiol is a plant-derived alternative to retinol derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant, an herb commonly used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. Bakuchiol has reached a tipping point, with Google searches growing 24% over the past year, compared to 2021, with a current search volume of 56K searches per month.

According to a Givaudan global CMI study, 77% of consumers across six countries said they would be very interested in a natural version of retinol, enjoying the multiple skin benefits without worrying about the potential side effects, such as redness, dryness, and irritation.

Giada Maramaldi, Botanical Actives Category Manager for Active Beauty, said,"Siliphos is the first natural alternative to retinoids and bakuchiol capable of providing well-aging benefits comparable to retinol. Extracted from Silybum marianum Gaertn fruit, it acts directly on collagen production to provide a natural, safe and efficient skincare solution, suitable for even most delicate skins."

Givaudan claimed in a clinical study Siliphos outperformed bakuchiol and acted as efficiently as retinoids by reducing:

  • Crow's feet wrinkles by 2x
  • Overall facial wrinkles by 2.3x
  • Number of forehead wrinkles by 21.2%
  • Circumference of forehead wrinkles by 17.4%
  • Redness by 22.9%
