Givaudan claims the new active ingredient outperforms the buzzy plant-based retinol alternative bakuchiol while offering benefits that challenge retinoid efficacy by reducing wrinkles without side effects.
Bakuchiol is a plant-derived alternative to retinol derived from the leaves and seeds of the babchi plant, an herb commonly used in Indian Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines. Bakuchiol has reached a tipping point, with Google searches growing 24% over the past year, compared to 2021, with a current search volume of 56K searches per month.
According to a Givaudan global CMI study, 77% of consumers across six countries said they would be very interested in a natural version of retinol, enjoying the multiple skin benefits without worrying about the potential side effects, such as redness, dryness, and irritation.
